I have always been very careful about how I load and distribute the payload in our van, always being fearful of overloading it, and with some justification it seems, as this weighing exercise showed we were within a scant 15Kg of our new maximum payload.

At Rest in Wales

I say new because sometime ago I obtained a replating weight up-grade from Lunar for our Clubman SB caravan from the original Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass of 1440Kg to 1495Kg. This had the effect of raising our User Payload by a useful 55Kg from insufficient, to just enough!

I had made several attempts to get our caravan weighed since we purchased it over a year ago, but on each occasion I have been thwarted. Last week, for example I had made an appointment to call at a weigh-bridge on our way to a touring site, but on arrival at the weigh-bridge we found the operator was absent on a cattle drive; I kid you not! No matter, another appointment was made at yet another weigh-bridge, this one on the way home from the site, and at long last, fourth time lucky, the operation was successfully completed. I was pleasantly surprised to find that our van was not overloaded, but only just within limits, thanks to the replating.

It would have obviously been so much better if I could have physically emptied our van to also obtain the actual empty weight, but it just wasn’t practical in a busy grain store yard, over a hundred miles from home, and in a poorly timed rain storm. So I’m left with the task of calculating the basic ex-works weight as follows.

The Mass In Running Order (MIRO) provided by the caravan manufacturer includes weight allowances for some essential items that are incorrect for our van, or rather for us, so I have removed them from this part of my calculation and included the correct allowance under the contents section. These were:

2x5Kg BP gas light bottles @ 16kg

Electric hook-up cable @ 6Kg

Toilet flush water @ 2Kg

Water in water heater @ 10Kg

Winding handle @ 1Kg

There were also items included with the van, and therefore in the MIRO that we have removed and discarded, so I have also removed these from my calculation.

Alko spare wheel carrier @ 7.5Kg

Original fold up table @ 10Kg

Fitted carpets @ 5Kg

I have included a list at the end of this article that shows the items that we do have in, or fitted onto our caravan when towing, together with their weights and stowage location within the van for your interest and information.

The tow-ball weight limit of our Volvo XC70 is 95Kg, so I aim to disperse the load in our van to keep to around the 85/90Kg level.

It can be seen that I have not made any allowance for the carriage of clothing, or food within the van on this occasion as we were returning home from tour and these items were packed in the car. If we were moving mid-tour then I would normally pack food jars and tins in a crate and place it in our car while lighter food packets and boxes would remain in situ, as would refrigerated items. Clothing would normally be left stored in lockers and our wardrobe.

It can be seen that despite the replating and careful use of our payload allowance the margin of error is small and it will be far too easy to overload our van and exceed the MTPLM.
